MELATONIN is a neurohormone produced by the pineal gland located at the base of the brain. The pineal gland reacts to light. During night it starts to produce melatonin which is released into the bloodstream which makes you drowsy and makes you fall asleep. However,when the light reaches the eye, the pineal gland shuts of the production of melatonin, thus removing drowsiness. This lets the body return to a normal day time state of alertness.
<br />MELATONIN controls the circadian rhythm,i.e.the biologic clock in humans based on a twenty-four hour sunrise/sunset cycle. As we grow older , the pineal gland produces less Melatonin. Research has shown that a small amount of Melatonin can bring on sleep without the narcotic effect of sleep-inducing drugs.
